A New Home

Well it's time for me to move to a new location. The area should offer some good photo opportunities, and maybe even some wildlife that I don't see much around my current area. I'll be sure to post some photos here of the surroundings!

Yantic Falls: Norwich, CT

This place is worth a trip, if you are in the area. It's not too far out of the way either. There's some area to walk, and decent photo opportunities. Close to where I took this photo, is a nice train bridge. Falls are always interesting, and usually have multiple shots all in the same area, but can be made different enough from each other. From a wide view, to closer shots, showing the water running over rocks.

Photo Relay

I've recently taken part in a photo relay. It's a fun time to challenge yourself with taking specific photos, then coming up with the next thing for someone to take/post a photo of!

IR Photography: Part 2

Played around with IR some more, and I'm happier with the results. Less grainy, and smoother. I'm still in an learning/experimental stage with it, and it's a fun thing to play with in post-processing. Like my friend, I used to be against post-processing for the most part. But it's been growing on me. It allows for more artistic expression. For example, I wasn't sure whether to go with the cool blue or a more realistic red/orange light that the sun would normally give off. I think one way to look at it is, when doing something more, out of the ordinary, like IR photography, why not do something different all together?

IR Photography: Part 1

Did some more reading on IR photography today, and took some shots after work over at Gardner Lake. It's a work in progress to get better quality photos out of an already IR inhibited camera. I'm not really willing to have it be dedicated to just IR or wanting to spend the money to have it professionally modified for both IR and Visible light. So I'm planning on trying to get the best I can out of the Tiffen 87 filter. The exposures for some of these shots are pretty lengthy, in the minutes range, at around 400-800 ISO. Tomorrow I plan on taking another shot in a brighter time of day.

The New Hampshire Trip: Misc Photos

There's a couple more photos I'd like to add from the trip. The first one is Beaver Falls on the way to Pittsburg. This was the part of the trip where we ended up going all the way up to the Canada border, and made a few stops along the way. It was a pretty good day, even if we didn't get to see any moose up there.

The second photo is a random stop we made on the second to last day. There was a barn that caught my friends eye, and his photo came out great, and you can see it on his blog. While there, a bunch of shots were taken of the horses. Here's one out of the mix. There's something about random scenic photography on the side of the road, especially while laying on the grass
to get low angle shots. And horses are just beautiful animals.

Fall Colors

As we all know, fall brings out some brilliant colors. Recently on our trip, we saw the NH offers some great colors. Today I decided to do something a little different from the grand landscapes, and narrow down the subject. Out back there's a tree with some pretty low branches. Using a +10 Macro filter, it allows the leaf to show its detail and color.

In some later posts, I'm hoping to get some local foliage landscapes, and then focus (no pun intended) on some IR shots.

The New Hampshire Trip: Part 4

As we traveled along, we saw a cow sign. This was something out of the ordinary. But sure enough, just down the street, a cow... in the road, and it looked mad. A Mad Cow. I snapped a photo through the window. It almost seems like a Mack Truck vs. Mad Cow situation. We passed the cow safely, and continued on our way.









One of our later stops was right by the Mount Washington auto road entrance. Even though we didn't go up the mountain, we had the fun opportunity to photograph its massiveness.









In the morning hours, a moose or two came around a swampy area, but soon after hid in the woods. We made plans to come back later that night, and it was worth it! A mother and two twins came out of the woods to drink and eat in front of a group of people. We took many shots of this moose family. It's a moment that we'll never forget.

The New Hampshire Trip: Eagle Sighted!

In the search for certain wildlife, along a random back road, a Bald Eagle flew overhead. My friend sighted, and identified it right away. He pulled over, and noticed it had landed in a nearby tree. It was a spectacular sight.

The New Hampshire Trip: Part 3

After our first moose encounter, we ventured out to find more. They hide very well, and can disappear into the woods just by taking a couple steps back. Along the way, more scenic photos were taken. It made the trip so enjoyable, not only to search for moose, but to take landscape photos along the way. But, we did end up seeing another one that was traveling back and forth in a swampy area. Another moose photographer waited about, taking photos of her. It was nice to see others enjoying nature as well.

The New Hampshire Trip: Part 2

Continuing on with the first day, we had a wonderful first Moose experience. We started to make our way to another location, but had to turn back. Then on the side of the road, multiple cars had pulled over, and everyone was checking out something below. Moose! We were thrilled to see them on our first day, snapping photo after photo of these great animals.

The New Hampshire Trip: Part 1

On a cold Friday morning, my friend and I left for a trip to remember forever. At around 5:30am we got up to leave, and made it by around 10:30. We stopped by our first scenic view down a dirt road. Some others were also there taking photos of the beauty of nature.









Our next stop was at Cathedral Ledge. The view was expansive, looking down at the town below. An interesting highlight was the green lake. I definitely recommend this stop. It's a short fun trip up a mountaint, with a great view.








We ventured up further to check out the Ledge itself, and take a photo for a couple, who were also enjoying the sites. Down on another ledge, some people were lowering down the rocks. Maybe an adventure for another day.
